X-Plane 9 for iPhone Really Flies

October 10, 2008 — Aviation enthusiasts who own an Apple iPhone are doing a lot more than just talking these days.

Laminar Research released X-Plane 9 for the iPhone or iPod Touch a couple weeks ago. So far reviewers like what they see.

“I’m hugely impressed with what has been achieved here,” writes Mark Avey on Flight Sim. “Although the graphics are superb and the fluidity is amazing, it’s really the control system that shines. Tilting the iPhone and using the accelerometers to control the aircraft is one of THE most realistic sim experiences I’ve ever had.”

Another review on Digg remarked, “While it doesn't have the extensive feature set of the Mac version, X-Plane 9 is an impressive effort that shows off the sheer power of the iPhone and iPod Touch, both computationally and graphically.”

“My biggest problem with X-Plane 9 was that it was hard to put the iPhone down and write this review!” Steven Sande wrote on TUAW, or The Unofficial Apple Weblog. “It is a very addictive app for flight simulation enthusiasts and pilots.”

Macworld reported that the iPhone version is scaled down from the desktop version, but still allows gamers to adjust the time of the day, weather, sky conditions and turbulence characteristics. You can choose from four different models of planes — the Cessna 172, Cessna 400, Cirrus Vision jet, and Piaggio Avanti — and the scenery is realistic as you fly around the Innsbruck, Austria area.

You can purchase and download X-Plane from the App Store for $9.99. It will work on the iPhone or iPod touch running iPhone 2.0 software or later.
